Discover Sinbad Mediterranean Cuisine

Walking into Sinbad Mediterranean Cuisine feels like stepping into a neighborhood spot that knows exactly what it’s doing and doesn’t need to shout about it. Located at 1480 Jamacha Rd #201, El Cajon, CA 92019, United States, this place has quietly built a reputation among locals who want real Mediterranean food without the fuss. I’ve eaten here more times than I can count, both grabbing a quick lunch and sitting down for an unhurried dinner, and the consistency is what keeps pulling me back.

The menu leans heavily into classic Mediterranean comfort food, and that’s a good thing. Think grilled meats that actually taste grilled, rice that’s fluffy instead of dry, and hummus that’s smooth and nutty without being drowned in oil. One visit, I watched the kitchen prep a fresh batch of falafel, soaking chickpeas overnight and grinding them in-house rather than relying on pre-made mixes. That process matters. You taste it in the crisp exterior and soft, herb-packed center. Food researchers from institutions like Harvard have long pointed out that traditional Mediterranean cooking methods, especially using legumes, olive oil, and herbs, help preserve nutrients and flavor, and this place sticks close to those roots.

What stands out is how the kitchen balances speed with care. Orders come out fast, but nothing feels rushed. During a busy dinner hour, I once chatted with the owner about how they marinate their chicken shawarma for hours using a yogurt-based blend. That method isn’t just tradition; food science backs it up. Yogurt marinades tenderize meat by breaking down proteins, which explains why the chicken stays juicy even when the place is packed. According to culinary studies cited by the American Culinary Federation, this technique improves moisture retention without masking natural flavor.

The menu offers plenty of options, whether you’re a meat lover or leaning plant-based. Lamb gyro plates, beef koobideh, and chicken kebabs share space with lentil soup, grape leaves, and fresh salads loaded with cucumbers, tomatoes, and herbs. The portion sizes are generous, which comes up again and again in customer reviews. I’ve personally split a combo plate with a friend and still left full. That value-for-money factor is one reason locals keep recommending it to newcomers.

Another thing people talk about in reviews is how approachable the staff is. You don’t feel like just another ticket number. On one visit, I asked for a recommendation and got an honest breakdown of what was popular that day and what might be too heavy if I wanted something lighter. That kind of transparency builds trust, and it shows in the loyal crowd that cycles through the dining room week after week.

From a broader perspective, Mediterranean cuisine has been studied extensively for its health benefits. The World Health Organization often references Mediterranean-style diets for their links to heart health and lower rates of chronic disease. While no restaurant meal is a health prescription, places like this stay close to those principles by emphasizing grilled proteins, fresh vegetables, and olive oil over processed ingredients. It’s comforting to know that enjoying a flavorful meal here doesn’t mean straying far from balanced eating.

The location in El Cajon also makes it convenient. Set in a small plaza, it’s easy to park and easy to pop in, whether you’re a local resident or passing through the area. Over time, this spot has become one of those reliable go-to locations where you bring friends when you want to impress them with good food rather than flashy decor.

That said, it’s worth noting that during peak hours, seating can feel tight, and wait times can stretch a bit. It’s not a deal-breaker, but planning around busy dinner times helps. Overall, the combination of thoughtful preparation, authentic flavors, and steady service explains why this place continues to earn positive buzz and repeat visits from people who know Mediterranean food and appreciate it done right.

  • I visited Sinbad on the recommendation of a friend in Texas. I liked the place and the atmosphere of the restaurant. They were very friendly and quick. They welcomed me as if I was an important person. I tried all of their food items. The fish was amazing, the chicken was amazing, and the meat was very delicious. It was the first time I had such amazing fried potatoes. There was no oil in them. I loved this. As for the appetizer plate, it is worth trying. Continue your success. Thank you for your hospitality. I wish you had a restaurant in Texas. I will recommend everyone who visits San Diego to come to you. I forgot to tell you their prices were a surprise to me. Are there any prices for a clean restaurant and the food is so delicious? You are wonderful. The prices are very, very good. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone present, from the owner of the restaurant, Mr. Hammam, and the staff.

  • One of the best Iraqi restaurants in El Cajon — hands down! Their beef shawarma and burgers are absolutely delicious. The shawarma is juicy, perfectly spiced, and wrapped in soft, fresh bread with authentic Iraqi flavors that are hard to find anywhere else. The burger? Unforgettable. It’s made with high-quality meat, grilled to perfection, and loaded with flavor — not your average fast food. You can tell everything is made with care and tradition in mind. If you’re in El Cajon and want a real taste of Iraqi street food with a gourmet twist, this is the place to go. 10/10!

  • Family owned and operated restaurant with AMAZING Iraqi food!!! The restaurant is clean and nicely decorated. There are plenty of indoor seating. The staff is super friendly and welcoming. The menu above the court has lots of yummy options. The two main categories are the juicy Iraqi style burgers and Levant style shawarma. They also have great appetizers. We ordered the Babaganoosh and stuffed grape leaves. Both were flavorful. Also tried the burgers. The meat is so tender and JUICY... I'm still drooling lol. I preferred the Ali Allammi Burger with grilled onions and grilled tomatoes...it comes with a side of fries. The Clock burger is similar except it has fries stuffed inside the burger in addition to the side of fries. The other difference is fresh vs grilled tomatoes. I personally enjoyed the grilled tomatoes. The beef shawarma was also very good but I have to admit that I've had better at Sincerely Syria in LA. I will definitely be returning. Mainly for the JUICY burgers. Portions are generous and prices are very fair for quiet ingredients and freshenes. Also, everything is prepared to order. Therefore it takes some time for the food to come out. So be patient. It's worth the wait. Highly recommend!

  • Sinbad is one of the best Mediterranean/Iraqi restaurants I’ve tried in the area. The food is flavorful, well-seasoned, and served in generous portions that easily make the meal worth the price. The chicken and beef shawarma are both excellent, and their plates come with fresh sides that complement the dish perfectly. The restaurant is clean, welcoming, and has a comfortable atmosphere. The staff is friendly, attentive, and always makes you feel like a valued guest. Whether you’re stopping by for a quick bite or sitting down for a full meal, this place consistently delivers great quality. Definitely a spot I’ll return to!

  • This place is outstanding, and I’m pretty picky when it comes to food! Since discovering it, I’ve already been back about five times—literally back-to-back for days. That should tell you something! I had the Zinger sandwich, and let me just say—OMG, it was absolutely delicious. The staff here are incredibly friendly and welcoming. I even asked for some tabbouleh, which isn’t on the menu, and they went out of their way to put it together for me. I added it to the sandwich, and wow, that took it to a whole new level! If you haven’t tried this place yet, you’re missing out. The food is amazing, the service is top-notch, and the prices are super reasonable. Definitely give them a shot!
